Raw Elite Shungite – Rare Noble Stone from Karelia, Russia

Raw elite shungite is an extremely rare natural mineral from the Precambrian era, formed over 2 billion years ago. In scientific classification, it is known as Type I shungite. This noble variety has been found only in one location worldwide — in Karelia, Russia, near the village of Shunga in the Medvezhyegorsk region.

The original deposit was discovered in the 1930s and accounted for only about 2% of the total shungite reserves. Today, this deposit is closed and nearly exhausted. The specimens offered are rare finds collected over time, making raw elite shungite exceptionally scarce.

Composition & Unique Properties

Raw elite shungite consists of up to 98% pure allotropic carbon, a composition unlike any other natural mineral. Its carbon structure contains C60 and C70 fullerene molecules, which are widely studied in science and known as some of the most powerful natural antioxidants.

One of the most remarkable features of this mineral is its electrical conductivity, comparable to that of metals. Despite not being a metal, elite shungite has an extremely low electrical resistivity of approximately

The natural color of raw elite shungite is deep black, but its smooth surface reflects light strongly, creating a distinct silvery sheen. This reflective effect often leads to descriptions such as silver or gray shungite, although the base color remains black.

Authentic specimens may contain natural inclusions of quartz and pyrite. Quartz can appear white, transparent, or slightly yellowish, while pyrite typically shows golden or orange tones. These minerals entered microcracks in the stone long after its formation and further confirm its natural origin.

Due to its rarity and value, raw elite shungite is frequently imitated, most often with anthracite coal. Genuine material cannot be inexpensive and cannot originate outside Karelia.
